PIONEER CLIMATE ADVOCACY STRATEGY LAUNCH 2024 – 2028
At Pioneer, our commitment to a sustainable future remains steadfast as we embark on a bold new chapter. We are proud to announce the launch of our Climate Advocacy Strategy for 2024–2028, a roadmap designed to drive meaningful action, foster innovation, and inspire comprehensive collaboration in the fight against climate change. The launch was held on 29th November 2024 in Laikipia County. The main objectives of the event included:
- Climate change baseline feedback.
- Pamoja climate resilience project milestones.
- Climate advocacy strategy launch.
- Elevating children and youth voices in climate agenda
Through the advocacy strategy, Pioneer Child Development Programme (PCDP) aims to strategically share knowledge to change or influence policies and practices that affect people’s lives.
In collaboration with Barnfonden (ChildFund Sweden) and with support from ForumCIV, PCDP is launching the Pamoja Climate Resilience Project, running from January 2024 to December 2025, to advance climate action and advocacy in Laikipia County. Communities in Laikipia and the arid regions of Nyeri County rely heavily on rain-fed agriculture and pastoralism, both of which are significantly impacted by climate change. Rising temperatures, unpredictable rainfall patterns, droughts and floods are disrupting agriculture and livelihoods, deepening poverty, fueling communal and human-wildlife conflicts, and exacerbating issues such as child abuse and exploitation. Pioneer Advocacy Strategy Roadmap involves 8 key steps:
STEP 1: Advocacy Issues
STEP 2: Advocacy Goal & objectives.
STEP 3: Target Audience Decision-makers and Influencers
STEP 4: Opposition/ obstacles
STEP 5: Advocacy Strengths, Limitations and Partnerships
STEP 6: Advocacy Approaches and Activities
STEP 7: Advocacy Messages
STEP 8: Measuring Advocacy Progress and Adaptive Management
The advocacy goal for 2024-2025 is to ensure that by December 2025, communities in Laikipia are actively empowered and supported by a comprehensive climate change framework. This includes the full operationalization of the Laikipia County Climate Act and the enactment of the Laikipia Water Services Bill, ensuring investments in climate-related sectors.
The strategy is guided by three main objectives forming a three-tier model:
(i) Operationalizing the climate change act
(ii) Enactment of the water services bill and
(iii) Transitioning community practices to more climate resilient agroecological practices.
Our advocacy approaches include:
- Lobbying
- Campaigns
- Meetings with government officials
- Translation of research
- Education/influencing events
- Consensus building and/or
- Creating champions.
Working with children has been paramount at Pioneer. Hence, the advocacy approach will as well involve children through the 4K Club Agenda with thematic areas including environmental conservation, agri-nutrition, agricultural projects, and civic engagement and citizenship.
The Pioneer Climate Advocacy launch marked a vital milestone in addressing climate change in Laikipia County while ensuring protection for nature.
Together, through our 2024–2028 Climate Advocacy Strategy, we can create a future where humanity and nature thrive in harmony.
