How PCDP Advances Sustainable Development Goals in Kenya
In a world increasingly aware of the interconnectedness of social, economic, and environmental challenges, Pioneer Child Development Programme (PCDP) stands out as a beacon of hope in three counties in Kenya (Nyeri, Laikipia, and Meru Counties). PCDP plays a significant role in advancing several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by focusing on child development while supporting women and youths. Here are various SDGs that PCDP operations in Kenya are directly aligned with:
SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being
Children's development and well-being are at the heart of PCDP where the organization helps mothers with young children to enhance the health outcomes of the children. This is achieved through the issuance of solar-powered water treatment and heating systems (Solvatten kits) and high-value crops that are rich in nutrients. A balanced diet helps children to improve their health and well-being ultimately improving children's development and survival.
SDG 4: Quality Education
PCDP fosters an inclusive and friendly learning environment for children helping children access quality education in schools. For example, PCDP has enhanced the learning environment for children by renovating toilets and promoting access to clean water for schools. This helps to ensure that children have friendly learning environments while also fostering a generation of informed and responsible individuals.
SDG 5: Gender Equality
As part of the vulnerable groups in the communities, women form a significant portion in the heart of PCDP. PCDP helps to close the gap between women and their counterparts by engaging women in creating a more resilient community. This helps to ensure that women take part in addressing important issues in the communities just like their counterparts.
SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation
Water is a crucial resource in human life that should be protected. PCDP ensures access to clean and safe water in households by issuing them with water purification solar system kits to purify water for household consumption. Also, PCDP ensures hygiene and sanitation of pupils through the issuance of hand washing points which helps to mitigate various diseases like diarrhea and dysentery.
SDG 13: Climate Action
Over 800 million households worldwide currently use solid fuels. For every one of these households, CO2 emissions could be reduced by 1 ton per year if they changed from heating/boiling with solid fuels to using Solvatten. Using Solvatten helps to address the issue of climate change since it mitigates deforestation especially to obtain firewood and charcoal ultimately helping to reduce climate impact. Also, PCDP takes a crucial role to advocate for ways of mitigating climate change impacts through trainings and facilitating households with climate-resilient techniques. Generally, PCDP covers all 17 SDGs that help the country achieve sustainable development by 2030.
Thus, PCDP plays a significant role in promoting the achievement of UN sustainable development goals in Kenya, especially in the three counties where it operates. Let us make the world greener and climate-friendly for our future generations.
