How does Pioneer Child Development Programme (PCDP) Promote and Protect Children Rights in Kenya?

Pioneer Child Development Programme (PCDP) is a Kenyan non-governmental organization (NGO) dedicated to supporting deprived, excluded and vulnerable children. Operating in Naromoru, Othaya (Nyeri County) and Timau (Meru County), PCDP focuses on various initiatives to protect and promote children's rights.

In Kenya, every child has the right to:

  1. compulsory basic education;
  2. basic nutrition, shelter and health care;
  3. be protected from abuse, neglect, harmful cultural practices, all forms of violence, inhuman treatment and punishment, and hazardous or exploitative labour;
  4. parental care and protection, which includes equal responsibility of the mother and father to provide for the child, whether they are married to each other or not.

Dedicated to ensuring that every child reaches their full potential, Pioneer CDP plays a significant role in the communities they serve. Below is a snapshot of how Pioneer enhances the protection of the above children's rights in Kenya:

  1. Educational Support: PCDP provides access to quality education for underprivileged children, ensuring they have the opportunity to learn and develop. This is achieved through the issuance of bursary support to students.
  2. Health and Nutrition Programs: The organization promotes healthy children in the communities through the economic empowerment of households. For example, Pioneer Child Development Programme issues fruit trees like Hass avocados, oranges and pixel trees to households which helps to improve the nutrition of children. Also, by empowering families through poultry, PCDP helps to increase protein content at the household level since family members including children have access to eggs and meat. The organization is also dedicated to offering health and nutritional training to parents helping to ensure healthy children and nutrition at households.
  3. Economic Empowerment: By supporting families through economic stability programs such as supporting enrolled households with water harvesting and storage facilities, poultry and fruit trees, PCDP addresses the root causes of child vulnerability, reducing the risk of exploitation.
  4. Community Engagement: PCDP collaborates with local communities to raise awareness about children's rights and encourage communities to create a protective environment against abuse and exploitation.

Hence, although PCDP does not directly participate in children's rights protection, the organization promotes an environment where every child’s rights are embraced and protected through various programs. Thus, Pioneer CDP plays a critical role in Kenya to ensure that children's rights are safeguarded and that every child is free from exploitation.
